To Robin,
I'm sorry I haven't been around to post for the last few months. I've been busy having the time of my life with one of the most amazing people I've ever met.
I'm talking about Robin, or
ellorgast as most people online know her. We've only had one short year together, and it flew by in a flurry of concerts, trips to museums, lolita meetups, fashion shows, dancing nights, and sleepovers.
When I first met her on egl, I wasn't expecting to find someone so incredible. We actually met at the Harry Potter book opening at Chapters last summer, where I recognized her from her photos on Lolita Snap and awkwardly stuttered a greeting. After a few months of being LJ Friends, she invited Bronwen, David and I to her Halloween party. I have to admit that I was petrified to meet such a popular Lolita in person, (which is why it took so long for us to actually get together) but when I walked into her beautiful house and she greeted us with a warm, happy smile, I knew that I had made the right decision to come. We played an intense game of spoons, had a kinder egg race and spent the night laughing for hours.
Soon after that, we started going to plays and dance performances in lolita, and afterwards we would get to know eachother over hot chocolates at the Mocha Cabanna. There were so many stories, and we almost always ended up staying out too late. During one of our teas, Robin mentioned the possibility of putting on a Lolita panel at our local anime convention, and that became our new project. We spent many nights taking notes and telling stories over her dining room table. Our panel turned out to be very informative, a lot of work, and an incredible amount of fun! We even offered our guests homemade sugar cookies and little pamphlets with helpful links and a summary of lolita styles. After our presentation, we went out for a photoshoot done by Robin's lovely sister, Jess.
After the panel, Robin mentioned that her sister wanted to study horse tack at Cardston's Remington Carriage Museum. She invited us along, and we got in Jess's little car, equipped with Tim Horton's Ice Capps. We drove by fields of "tartan", which is what we called the rolling hills that were mowed in neat patterns, and spent the trip warmed by the sun. The museum was deserted, and we saw the most gorgeous carriages and buggies. The movie theatre was deserted, and so they put on a short film about the carriages just for us! Robin was wearing her Beth Op and she looked so bright and summery, suiting the location perfectly. It was such a perfect little trip.
We had our first sleepovers around this time, and found out that Robin was also a fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, the best rock opera in history. She's about the only other person I know around my age (aside from my roommates) who would even think about watching it, and we found so many little things like that that we could bond over. This was also around the time that we started finding out that we didn't need lolita to be our reason to spend time together, and so when we heard that a friend of ours was putting on a Steampunk fashion show, we promptly invited her. We had never been to the club it was held at, Suede, and we were captivated. A modern but classy club with an emphasis on fashion and dressing well? It was our kind of place. We saw Patti's designs, which were incredible, and then invited Robin to come dancing at Essie's the next night.
Suede may have been for us, but Essies didn't seem to fit the bill. There wasn't a soul on the dance floor. After numerous attempts at trying to get the dance floor going, we decided to go back to Suede, even though we had heard that it wasn't great for dancing. How wrong we were.
The club was packed, with two bars going full time, and dancers getting wild on the floor. Bronwen, Melissa and I were utterly shocked at how incredible of a dancer Robin was, and she had the three of us imitating her moves throughout the night. We hardly took a break to breathe, and I remember my muscles hurting so badly the next morning. It was so worth it.
The day after, I had to bite my tongue so many times to keep from squealing out to all of my friends and coworkers that "we danced and it was fun and stuff OMG!" (A direct quote from Robin, herself!) I was counting down the days to when I could dance with my girls next, and when Bronwen's parents asked us to house sit, we invted Robin over for dancing, pizza and a sleepover. Every week Bronwen, Melissa and I would end up talking about how excited we were to see what she would be wearing next, or who would dance with who to what song. Silly stuff like that became our weekly routine, and it wasn't hard to see that Robin had definitely become part of our group.
Suede became a constant in our lives, something to look forward to every Saturday night. David Usher came to play here in Lethbridge for the second time. I had won two tickets to his concert at the fashion show, and Robin and Melissa bought their own to come. Robin is a hardcore David Usher fan, and Melissa had never been to a concert before. I normally nod my way through opening acts at concerts, but this was Shaun Verreault from Wide Mouth Mason, and The New Odds, who are actually quite famous. Robin was incredibly cool and decided to wait and get spots RIGHT infront of the stage, so close that we were resting on the amps. All acts were amazing, and we were literally were close enough to touch David. The girls got to hold his hand, but I missed and got to touch his arm. He threw his water bottle into the crowd, and it is currently taped to my linen closet door, along with the rest of my mini shrine. We stayed really late and ended up partying with all of the bands, except for David Usher. That night was magical.
We started wearing lolita a bit more around this time, and when Robin got back from a short vacation, we took her for Chinese and invited her to a Masquerade ball at Chapters. She was very interested, and I could already see her lolita gears working out an outfit in ther head. The masquerade was a ton of fun, but we almost missed it due to a communication error. Halfway through styling Robin's beautiful hair, Melissa mentioned that the ball might end at midnight, instead of begin at midnight, and so in a mad rush I threw together my makeup and hair and we were off. The night was spent getting interviewed for the local news, taking photos, and decorating creepy masks while every other sucker there waited in line for a book. Before leaving, we met an incredible chalk artist who also was a crystal juggler, like Jareth from Labyrinth, which is why Robin called him "Jareth Jr."
The summer was spent with nights of strawberry-vanilla-mint daquiris, local park invasions at midnight, dance parties in my living room and tons of things I cannot even begin to describe. I have memories of the four of us having pillow fights and naps on the mattresses we dragged out of our bedrooms to use as makeshift beds. We did everything, and we did nothing.
We had two more mini-photoshoots in the coulees, where Bronwen and I destroyed over $400 worth of brand lolita shoes. We were having so much fun that we didn't even care. A few months ago, I would have been devastated to wreck my lolita. This is how much fun Robin is.
At the fashion show I mentioned earlier, Robin had won a free photo session with Leslie of Missing Frame Photographics. We procrastinated like mad with that session, and we ended up waiting until Robin's last day in town to actually do the shoot. It was our first professional shoot, and we got on our best outfits. Our theme was black and off-white, and so both Melissa and Robin wore the two colours in classic outfits. Bronwen and I were in full gothic, and pardon my arrogance, we looked amazing. We're still waiting for the pictures. After the shoot, Robin asked if we could go to Crazy Cakes, the first place we had ever planned on doing a lolita meetup. For some unknown reason, we had still never gone. The cafe was done in mint green and white, and it was a lolita's dream. I am so glad that we finally fulfilled those plans we made so long ago.
Before going out, Robin gave us an incredibly beautiful gift. A lamp that she had bought at IKEA because our living room needs more light. It has the prettiest designs on it, and we're going to light it up tomorrow. She also gave us each cards that were so well suited to our personalities, it was almost creepy. A perfect mix between humor and sentimentality, and we all ended up crying and exchanging our goodbyes.
With one final night at Suede, and we danced until we literally dropped. We had never stayed until last call, but we wanted to pack all the dancing in that we could. Robin wore her adorable Meta Punkma skirt with her new boots that she bought with me, (on one of my favourite days with her) and Bronwen, Melissa and I decided to get fancy for our last night together. We forgot to eat the cupcakes that she brought, but I don't think we could have eaten them if we tried.
In the end, I don't think I'm ever going to meet anyone who is quite like her. Someone so funny, so smart, so kind hearted and someone who I really connect with. I don't think I will, and I don't think I need to. This isn't the end, Robin, and you're always going to be one of us. We love you so much.
